Javier Navarrete was born in 1956 in Teruel, Spain.After studying with Chilean composer Gabriel Brncic in Barcelona, he became involved in avant-garde performances and electronic music research.
In 1986 he wrote the score for his first film, a horror cult movie called, In A Glass Cage. After his first feature a number of Spanish and English films followed including director Guillermo del Toro’s Devil’s Black bone as well asPan’s Labyrinth, for which he earned an Oscar Nomination for Original Score and a Grammy Nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for a Motion Picture. Navarrete lived in Los Angeles for some time after that where he continued to compose for studio films while actively participating in the art scene. One of those studio films being the blockbuster Wrath of the Titans. While living in Los Angeles, Javier still managed to collaborate with European directors, one of them being Jordan Scott who directed Cracks. In 2012 he scored the HBO movie Hemingway and Gellhorn with cutting edge director Philip Kaufman and editor Walter Murch. This became another milestone for Navarrete, as he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a TV Movie.Javier now is back in Europe, living in London and Barcelona, where he has collaborated with director Neil Jordan on Byzantium. Javier most recently wrote the score to Peter Pau’s Asian Blockbuster Zhongkui: Snow Girl and The Dark Crystal. |
