BLITZ BERLIN |
Blitz/Berlin is a trio of experimental film composers based in Los Angeles, California. Known for their unconventional and evocative scores, Blitz has made their name with critically acclaimed films “Blade Runner: 2036 Nexus Dawn”, “The Void”, and “Still/Born”. The haunting sonic world conjured by the group has earned them numerous accolades in both feature films and movie trailers, including festival awards from Overlook, Sitges, and TIFF, a Clio Award for their work on “The Girl On The Train” trailers, a Golden Trailer award for “Birdbox”, and a JUNO Award nomination for “Instrumental Album of the Year”.
Members Martin Macphail, Tristan Tarr, and Dean Rode attribute their unique sound to an unconventional upbringing, cutting their teeth in punk rock bands and learning to self-produce and compose music by pure necessity. “Growing up we made music with whatever we had at hand, trying to make things sound cool while using literal garbage.” Admits Tarr. “For our film work, it’s always been a matter of drawing inspiration from a story, connecting to characters, getting in their heads” says Macphail, “No two people or stories are exactly the same, so we try to create melodies and sounds that embrace the strangeness within each.” As it turns out, this DIY approach to film score has created a niche for the group - creating unheard sonic worlds for each new film while employing everything from new software sampling techniques, to building new instruments from scrap metal. After relocating to Los Angeles from Canada in 2018 and singing with First Artists Management the group has racked up an impressive list of upcoming projects and continues to carve their sonic niche into the LA music scene. |
